40 years ago: KU football and related contests getting under way

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 4, 1971:

New Kansas University football coach Don Fambrough and his team were preparing for Saturday, Sept. 11, when the 1971 football season would get under way. “Will Nebraska retain its national championship or will fiery Big Eight challengers like KU, Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas State derail the Big Red Machine?” inquired a front-page article. The Journal-World was also kicking off its annual Football Contest, a feature that had reportedly gained in popularity every year. Previous contests had lured football prognosticators from every state in the union as well as from some other countries. “There are even entries from servicemen in Vietnam,” the article stated, “and belated though they ma6y be, legitimate duplicate winners are always rewarded.” The top entrant each week was to receive a 15-pound dressed turkey and the two runners-up received 10-pounders.
