Lawrence driver’s license office closed Wednesday morning

September 2, 2011

The Lawrence driver’s license office will be closed Wednesday morning for installation of new equipment and software to simplify the driver’s license process and verify documents.

The office at 1035 N. Third St., Suite 122, will be closed in the morning for the upgrade and employee training then re-open at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

“We are constantly searching for ways to make the process of getting a driver’s license more convenient and secure for Kansans,” said state Director of Vehicles Donna Shelite. “This upgrade is another step in that right direction,” she said.

Boy I hope it speeds up the process! I went over around 11:00 A.M. on a Wednesday morning on or about August 15th; line backed-up out the door. Don't know if this is typical but I assume everybody does not have an 1.5 hours to kill. Seemed like it took the 3 clerks about 15 minutes per customer; and the most of these were simple re-news.

The only the U.S. Post Office on Vermont Street is worse; typically 1 or 2 (if lucky) clerks at the counter, back room people wandering around. None of staff seem to be concerned about the long wait lines, a little bit of an attitude as well. Must be that location; the one on south side of town is much more efficient.
