100 years ago: Peeping Tom makes annual appearance on Alabama Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 1, 1911:

  • “Have you seen Jack, the Peeper? He is abroad in the land again. At any rate he was out in the 700 block on Alabama street last night. He went from house to house peeping in through the windows…. The man appeared about 8:30 and peeped in every house on the west side of the street. The people were very much frightened but the man got away before they had aroused their courage to the point of resistance. This is the first appearance of Jack this season but he may be expected during the winter. He has generally been supposed to be a harmless lunatic but he may be a criminal.”
  • “Dr. M. T. Sudler, Associate Dean of the K. U. Medical School, arrived in Lawrence last night after spending the summer in New York and today the appointments of the teachers in Kansas University Medical School were given out. Dr. Sudler is predicting the greatest year in the history of the University medical school.”
  • “Wamego, Kan., has a bloomer-girl baseball team that is believed to be the only permanent organization of its kind in the state. The team was formed early this summer when the town found itself in need of funds with which to defray the expense of giving a festival this fall. The unmarried young women of the town at that time played the married young women and the proceeds were placed in the festival fund. Since then the unmarried young women have continued to play other bloomer girl teams, winning all of the six scheduled contests.”
