The results keep getting better for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Lawrence Police Department after their third prescription drug “Take-Back Day” on Saturday.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman, said 165 people dropped off a total of 265 pounds of over-the-counter and prescription medications in the parking lot near the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

It was the third local event since September 2010. About 100 people brought in 180 pounds of drugs at the first event, and in April 130 people dropped off 230 pounds of medication. The drugs are turned over to be destroyed by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The events are conducted nationally and are meant to give the public a safe way to discard old medicine to keep it from being abused or flushed into public water supplies.

“It was very encouraging to see that there’s a continuing increase in the number of participants and the number of disposed drugs they bring in,” Lewis said. “I expect that number just to continue to increase as long as the DEA continues their take-back days.”

He said the department expects to conduct the next one in the spring.

Robert Neff, a Lawrence police neighborhood resource officer, and Pat Hubbell, a co-owner and pharmacist-in-charge of the Sigler Pharmacy at 4951 W. 18th St., also worked at the event Saturday.
