40 years ago: Football, Band Day to go on in spite of ‘miserable’ weather

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 30, 1971:

The best word for the weather was “miserable” on a recent weekend when both Lawrence High School and Kansas University were to play football. A reported .59 inches of rain had fallen Friday morning, with temperatures dropping to 45 and expected to fall even lower, with an 80 percent chance for more rain, for the Lions’ game in the evening. Rain chances were pegged at 60 percent for the next day’s KU game, with nippy northeast winds and temperatures unable to climb out of the 40s. In spite of the uncomfortable weather, the annual Band Day festivities were to go on at KU, with a spectacular halftime show planned.
