Treasured service

October 29, 2011

To the editor:

I am a retiree, one of that demographic Lawrence wants to attract, and moved here about a year ago. I talk a lot, probably annoyingly, about the benefits of living in a university town, the friendliness of the people, the beauty of lakes, trees and flowers but what moves my family and friends in Colorado and Missouri to awed admiration is the trash pickup situation. “You mean,” they say in hushed tones “that you just put stuff out by the curb and they take it? No bag limit, no fines, no nasty little notes on trash that doesn’t qualify?”

When I assure them that there is none of that, they almost weep.

Please, please don’t change it.

It is a generous set-up. You are right.

Lawrence gives "lip-service " to homeowners & retires, but really caters to landlords & special interests with personal ( financial ) connections to city hall.

City trash cans are coming.

While I would not retire in Lawrence, the trash service is the best I know of anywhere. Even better when you live on an alley and can put anything out any time without annoying anybody and it will disappear. Many a time I have seen people cruise through the alleys looking for something they can use/recycle. A good deal all around---and the employees are great too.

Hope the don't "fix" it.

"I have seen people cruise through the alleys looking for something they can use/recycle."

Some call that "shopping at the People's Mart."

That is very funny! I get the same response from my family. They simply cannot believe that I can pretty much set almost anything out without having to pay extra for bag tags or getting a nasty note from the trash guys.

it's definitely a positive aspect of lawrence...here in Portland the trash service is like an exaggerated negative version of the dmv or the irs: limited to one can of a specified volume, all trash must be placed into said can while retaining the ability to tightly secure the lid, must not exceed specified weight, any trash not fitting into can #1 must be secured in another can and this shall incur an additional fee, blah blah....a separate container is issued by the service for the mandatory recycling, again with numerous regulations. Now the idiots in charge have decreed that trash pickup will be reduced to twice per month instead of weekly. This is due to the new mandatory composting, where yet another container will be issued for compostable material. They say the reduction in trash volume will make up for the service cut, yet additional charges will be billed for the composting service. Despite the fact that the math on that only works if 50% of your trash is food waste / compostabe. It sucks but the tree huggers around here love the concept, as do the owners of the waste management company....so be wary how you vote, lawrence. You've got much less problematic trash service- don't screw it up

Do they have free compost giveaways like they do here?

Areas of the country that have great weather and access to mountains, beaches, art museums......need rate limiters on growth. Places like New York and LA didn't impose any growth limiters and their cities grew until they couldn't fit any more people in.

Portland, Mendocino and many other smaller cities have growth limiters. Water is a good one. If you don't build more water resources, you can keep developers out of your pristine little artsy city by saying there is no water. Trash pickup is another. If you can make trash pickup odious, people will find somewhere else to live.

These limitations are contrived to keep growth out of their little cities. The contrived problems are a way for limousine liberals to impose quotas on people while hiding behind environmentalism. That way they can feel good about their discrimination.

Environmentalism is the way that liberals can be puritans and bigots without facing their own iniquities. Trash pickup is just one way for the puritans to make you feel guilty.

Ooh, the conspiracies that abound. Be afraid of those evil liberals, very afraid.

The only trash service I ever had that was better was when I lived in Lamar, MO. It, too, was city operated and they picked up TWICE a week!
