40 years ago: Baby abandoned in car on chilly night

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 29, 1971:

On a recent night with temperatures averaging 49 to 52 degrees, unidentified bar patrons walking down the 100 block of West Seventh had heard a baby crying from the back seat of a parked car. Passing by the car again three hours later, they saw the baby, apparently still unattended and covered with one thin blanket, and called the police. Responders used a coat hanger to unlock the car’s door and took the baby to the police station, where juvenile officers took him to a foster home at about midnight. Juvenile Officer Harold Hutton said that at the time the officers had performed the rescue, the bottle that had been left with the baby was empty. He added that the baby had stopped crying soon after it was picked up. A woman identifying herself as the mother had contacted the Douglas County Juvenile Court at about 10:30 the following morning, but as of the time of the newspaper report, the eight-month-old boy remained in foster care.
