Suspect makes a run for it, but police get their man

Lawrence police on Tuesday evening arrested a 28-year-old Lawrence man on several charges after he ran from officers in east Lawrence.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a police spokesman, said that at 5:30 p.m., an officer noticed the suspect, Anthony J. Belles, who had several warrants out for his arrest, in a vehicle near Eighth and New Hampshire streets. After a vehicle stop, the man ran away on foot, and police officers and a sheriff’s deputy pursued him.

Sarna said the suspect threw a brick at a patrol car in the 800 block of New York Street and then ran inside A-1 Automotive, 837 Pa., and took a transmission disc. Officers caught up with Belles and took him into custody near Ninth and Delaware streets, and took him to the Douglas County Jail.

Douglas County prosecutors filed two counts of aggravated assault, one count of criminal damage to property and one count of obstruction against Belles.

According to jail records, Belles had outstanding warrants for his arrest in Lawrence Municipal Court and district courts in Douglas and Johnson counties.
