100 years ago: Comet appears in evening sky

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 23, 1911:

  • “Last evening the Journal-World office was called by many people asking what the bright light was in the northwestern sky…. A reporter called Prof. M. E. Rice, professor of astronomy at the University…. The Journal-World told a few evenings ago about Brooks’ comet and the probabilities are that the strange light in the sky was from that comet.”
  • “William Jennings Bryan, the most famous Democrat in the world, will speak in Lawrence November 1st in the interest of Joseph Taggart, candidates for Congress. The address will be held in Fraternal Aid Hall, but in order to let every one hear him who wishes, T. J. Sweeney who has the meeting in charge has arranged for an overflow meeting out doors.”
