Capt. Matthew Maness was awarded distinguished honor graduate of the captain’s career course Sept. 20 at Fort Benning, Ga. Capt. Maness is a 2002 graduate of Free State High School and a 2006 graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Capt. Maness was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., from February 2007 through November 2010. He was deployed to Iraq from September 2008 to September 2009. He received the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional and meritorious service while assigned as an executive officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is currently assigned to Pacific Command at Camp Zama, Japan.

Capt. Maness is the son of Joan and Larry Stowell of rural Paola.
