Around and About for October 22, 2011

St. John’s United Church of Christ, Worden, will hold its Mission Festival at 1 p.m. Sunday. Guest speaker will be Clint Hornberger. He will be speaking on his recent trip to Vietnam and the orphanages he visited.

Nineteen students, selected for their academic achievement, professional potential leadership, participation and service, are the 2011 outstanding seniors in the College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University. Each, nominated by their professors, were honored at a May 13 pre-graduation ceremony. Outstanding seniors included: Mary Cox, Linwood.

Sarah Rahija, 33, Lawrence, won the second annual Progresso Soup’s Souper You Debut contest. Rahija spent the May 20-22 weekend in New York City where she experienced a weekend of fashion and fun. While there, she received a head-to-toe makeover from the Louis Licari Salon. She was also provided with $1,000 spending money, as well as a $1,000 shopping spree and personal wardrobe consultation at the Lord & Taylor department store.

Jared Oshel, Lecompton, earned bachelor’s degrees in physical education and athletic training May 14 from Benedictine College in Atchison.

Kelsey Oyler, Lawrence, senior at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla., has begun student teaching at Ranch Heights School in Bartlesville. Oyler is an elementary education major and plans to graduate with a bachelor’s degree next May.

Jennifer Underwood, Lawrence, was awarded associate degrees in arts and science May 15 from Cottey College in Nevada, Mo.
