It’s good to stop and recognize some everyday heroes in our community.

This week’s Valor Public Safety Awards ceremony offered another reminder of the important role our local firefighters and law enforcement officers play in the daily life of our community.

The event, sponsored by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, honored 14 people for acts of heroism in the line of duty. The honorees had been involved in a number of life-saving events. They rescued a boy from the Kansas River and saved a woman trapped in a burning home. They assisted in accident rescues and other emergency situations. They saved lives.

All of them said their actions were simply part of the job, a job they do without any thought to earning an award. Nonetheless, they said, it’s nice to receive some recognition, a “pat on the back.”

Congratulations to the chamber and its business sponsors for establishing what is planned as an annual recognition. We would like to add our thanks and congratulations to the deserving public servants honored on Tuesday.
