From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 21, 1986:

Both Kansas University and Kansas State students, as well as some people with Fort Riley military identifications, were included in a group of people arrested after riotous “celebrations” in Manhattan’s Aggieville following KSU’s recent 29-12 football win over KU. Manhattan police had said earlier in the week that they were taking steps to prevent a repeat of a similar disturbance two years earlier, but the measures had apparently been ineffective. An estimated 20 to 25 storefront windows had been either shattered or severely cracked, “mostly from being pelted with full beer cans and bottles.” The crowd of about 8,000 had also overturned a Volkswagen, set it afire, and later pushed it through a window, over the screamed objections of the car’s owner, who yelled at the crowd that he had only collision insurance. A 19-year-old was listed in satisfactory condition at Stormont-Vail Medical Center after having been struck on the head with a blunt object in a parking lot. Police had kept a low profile during the night, blocking off the streets to incoming cars but opting not to bring in additional officers. “I think [they’d] get killed,” said one officer.
