100 years ago: School superintendent recommends fresh air
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 20, 1911:
- [From the School Superintendent’s “Notes” — “We are sorry for the child that must sit in and breathe over and over again the foul air of the average school room. Children grow stupid and dull, and the teacher is not at her best in such an atmosphere. Dear teacher, will you not see to it that the very best sanitary conditions prevail in and about your school room.” … “The teacher who is leading her pupils to see the beauty of the woods, hills, and valleys around them these glorious autumn days is teaching a lesson that will be a joy to them for all time. A Friday afternoon in the woods might be made a most profitable afternoon.”
- [Advertisements] “Your step has lost elasticity because your blood has lost vitality, which Hood’s Sarsaparilla will restore.” … “Do the right thing at the right time. Act quickly in time of danger. Backache is kidney danger. Doan’s Kidney Pills act quickly. Plenty of evidence to prove this.” … “Mrs. Pott’s Nickel Plated SAD IRONS, 69c a set.
