A 16-year-old boy riding a bicycle was involved in an accident with a motor vehicle shortly after 9 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Third and Michigan streets. The boy had veered into the left lane to allow a car aggressively honking at him to pass, and was then clipped by the mirror of a second vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

He fell from his bicycle and was later treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for cuts and pain to his side, said Lawrence Police Department Sgt. Trent McKinley. The vehicle believed to have clipped the boy did not stop, and the boy did not get a good look at it.

I say it is time to local review driving laws regarding reckless driving. Perhaps irresponsible driving as well.

The "honker" if found should be dealt a serious blow to the wallet and sent to the clinker for 3 days minimum plus have the driving license suspended for 60 days on the first offense. Double the sentence next time, triple the sentence the next time etc etc etc.

This"honker" endangered this persons life. Completely unacceptable!

i think they should review all driving laws vehicle, motorcycle and bicycle. i was driving into lawrence over the bridge a few weeks ago on a friday night at 5:15ish of course the traffic was delayed because of the construction has it down to one lane on the bridge but there was this young lady i would say aprox 22 riding her bike mind you not on the side walk provided for the walkers or bikers but smack dab in the middle of the vehicle lane (which would be ok if there was not construction and heavy traffic... she had traffic backed up from johnnys to 6th street, some ppl were brave enough to squeeze past her , but with the way she was weaving i was not about to pass her , she was flipping ppl off where were passing her and honking at her and telling here there is a sidewalk for you to ride on , but she obviously was not bright enough to figure that out or to have the vocabulary to use words other than the vulguer ones she was saying , by the time i approched her i was going to go on around her at the end of the bridge she then without looking decides to turn left in from of me , YES i honked because it scared me i came so close to hitting her , WOW she had more words that a sailor could ever imagine and lots of hand signs.... now that i think back on it ... maybe we just need to teach ppl common sense instead of traffic laws....its amazing what a lil common sense will do for a person... and thoes around them....... everyone have a fall-tastic day.....

From reading your posting, I can't help but think that the woman on the bicycle was either under the influence of some serious drugs, or was schizophrenic.

That news report sounds like a story a kid would tell his parents to keep him out of trouble.

---nice to catch the driver, charge him/her with leaving the cene of an accident, etc. throw the book at him/her.

Merrill says "review the laws." LOL!

obviously driver/honker isn't respecting the current laws as currently written! Merrill's idea looks stupid on the fce of it.

I agree with friendlyhawk... there is not the whole story here.

Merrill doesn't take into consideration that the boy might have been trying to mess with the car behind him and put his own life in peril... we do not have the whole story. Then again, in Merrill's religion of the green, those on bikes are always in the right and those in cars in the wrong.
