100 years ago: Early cold snap forecast for Kansas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 13, 1911:

  • “Willard Brown, one of the best known men in town, has just been appointed superintendent of mails for the Lawrence office, a position that will carry with it an increased salary over that which Mr. Brown is now getting. In reality Mr. Brown has had charge of this department for a long time with the designation of ‘foreman.’… Willard Brown will in his new position see to it that the mail goes in and out as it should. Of course he has been doing this for some time but the new place gives him further honor. Willard Brown entered the mail service in Lawrence in May 1889 and has been in the work every day since.”
  • “Unless the predictions of the old time prophets are called off, some cold weather is heading for Kansas. There may be snow, but at least it will be some real cold weather. Read this dispatch from the west and see for yourself. Pocatello, Idaho — Southwestern Montana is in the grip of a terrific snow storm that has cut off Butte from communication with the outside world. Before the wires ceased operation it was reported that over two feet of snow had fallen. Street car service is suspended.”
