Jefferson County Republicans select Jason Belveal as new prosecutor

The Jefferson County Republican Central Committee have selected an attorney who lives in Valley Falls to fill a vacancy as the county’s top prosecutor.

Committee members, meeting Tuesday night in Oskaloosa, elected Jason Belveal for the post, according to Travis Oliver, the party’s chairman.

Belveal, who has worked for a Topeka law firm, was the only nominee for the post, Oliver said. The post became open after Jefferson County Attorney Robert Fox announced he was taking a legal position with the Kansas Corporation Commission.

“I think (Belveal) will do a good job for Jefferson County,” Oliver said. “He has a lot of experience in criminal law already.”

Gov. Sam Brownback still needs to approve the selection. Belveal would serve the remainder of Fox’s term and would face election in November 2012.

Fox was a replacement for Caleb Stegall who was elected in 2008 and in 2010 became counsel for Brownback.
