A pedestrian was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Tuesday evening after he was struck by a vehicle near Ninth and Vermont streets.

Sgt. Troy Squire, a Lawrence police spokesman, said the man had been walking north in the alley between Vermont and Kentucky streets about 5:30 p.m., and he was attempting to cross Ninth Street.

At the same time, the driver of a westbound vehicle turned south into the alley and struck the man, Squire said.

Squire identified the man as Jesse Woods, a 35-year-old Lawrence resident. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical workers took him via ambulance to LMH.

Squire said police initially did not issue any citations, but officers were still investigating the incident.

LMH officials said Woods was treated and released by about 7:30 p.m.

There's a day care at the other end of that alley. Parents picking up their kids at that time of day drive like it's a race course.

The victim may be the same guy I saw crossing Tennessee street at 9th about the same time, around 6'2-3" short haircut, He seemed to be tempting drivers to challenge him as he was crossing against the light. He would take a few steps then stop and look at the drivers he was disrupting. Take a another step, turn around again and look at drivers. Not sure if he ever actually went across the street. Or he just screwed with traffic.
