From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 8, 1986:

• At a recent city commission meeting, Commissioner Mike Amyx was awarded a hat and T-shirt and commended by Fire Chief Jim McSwain for taking “action above and beyond the duties of a city commissioner.” Amyx, who had put out a neighbor’s stove fire on Sept. 15, said, “I’m glad I had the fire extinguisher and I’m sure glad it was full.”
• A crowd of about 150 people, mostly Kansas University students, attended a recent debate on the liquor-by-the-drink issue. Gary Toebben, executive vice president of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, said that it was time to dispose of Kansas’ current “club card” system, which had an alienating effect on visitors from out of state. Voters were to have their chance to change the state’s liquor laws in the upcoming November 4 election. The law had last been challenged in 1970, when liquor-by-the-drink had failed to pass by a narrow margin — 50.8 percent to 49.2 percent.
