From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 6, 1971:

• An article described several stereotypes of college students and then reported on the actual student population at Kansas University for a comparison. “If visions of bra-less coeds, of greasy long-haired unshaven guys, of young people clad in sandals and grimy chopped-off blue jeans and T-shirts” formed part of readers’ preconceived notion of the average student, the writer urged them to look closer. “Students have been painted with a pretty broad brush,” the writer opined, saying that while societal changes had of course affected students, there was still quite a variety of clothing and morals up on the hill.
• The 14th annual Maple Leaf Festival was ready to begin in Baldwin. A talent show and the crowning of the Maple Leaf Queen were to kick off the festivities.
