40 years ago: Colleges, junior colleges showing enrollment increases

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 5, 1971:

A recent report revealed increased enrollments at most of the Big Eight Conference schools this fall. Although there was a decrease of approximately 1,300 students at the University of Nebraska’s three campuses, several increases were apparent, including a jump in nearly 1,000 at Kansas State University. Most educators agreed that Vietnam veterans returning to school would account for a gradual increase in enrollment that was expected to last until the mid-70s. School officials also anticipated that the “post Korean War baby boom” would hit campuses beginning about 1978. Junior colleges were seeing even greater increases, with their enrollments skyrocketing from 200 to 300 percent. College administrators were welcoming the junior-college boom, seeing the institutions as partners rather than as competitors.
