39-year-old Lawrence man arrested on a charge of indecent liberties with a child

Lawrence police arrested a 39-year-old Lawrence man Tuesday evening on a sex crime charge involving a child.

Kim Murphree, a police spokeswoman, said police were called to Lawrence Memorial Hospital to speak to the mother of the alleged victim, an 11-year-old boy.

The alleged incident occurred Monday in southern Lawrence, Murphree said.

The man was booked into the Douglas County Jail on one charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child at 5 p.m. Tuesday after he was taken into custody at the police department’s Investigations and Training Center, 4820 Bob Billings Parkway, according to jail records.

Murphree said the case remained under investigation.

Cheryl Wright, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, said prosecutors were reviewing information to make a decision about filing formal charges. If charges are filed, the suspect likely would have a first appearance in court Thursday afternoon, Wright said.

The Journal-World generally does not identify sex crime suspects unless they are convicted.
