25 years ago: Study session to discuss smoking ordinance

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 5, 1986:

  • City Commissioner Ernest Angino said that it was time for the commission to give more serious consideration to a smoking ordinance and was asking for a study session to examine the issue. “We don’t need to move with all deliberate speed, but I don’t think we ought to shilly-shally around with it either,” Angino said. The commission agreed to schedule a study session, at which they would examine smoking ordinances which had been adopted in Topeka and Boulder, Colo.
  • Lawrence residents were thrilled to see an end to eight straight days of rain. “My family has cabin fever early and it’s not winter yet,” said one local mom. Soggy Lawrencians could look forward to a forecast calling for no rain and high temperatures around 70 degrees.
