25 years ago: Downtown lighting undergoes improvement

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 3, 1986:

  • In order to brighten downtown Lawrence at night and improve safety in the area, streetlights along Massachusetts Street were undergoing a change. The smoked-glass panes in the lights were being replaced with clear glass as part of a downtown improvement project. The city was financing the change, along with a bus stop recently constructed on the northwest corner of Ninth and Massachusetts, as part of the federal Main Street program.
  • Larry “Bud” Melman, of “Late Night with David Letterman,” was scheduled to appear at Kansas University’s first basketball scrimmage. Melman was to be a guest at “Late Night with Larry Brown,” a pre-scrimmage rally at the Burge Union, at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 14. At 11 p.m., the gates of Allen Fieldhouse were to open, and at 12:01 on Oct. 15, the earliest date allowable per NCAA regulations, the Jayhawks would begin to practice.
