100 years ago: Cavalry regiment to hold reunion in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 3, 1911:

  • “The semi-centennial and fifteenth annual reunion of the surviving officers and men of the Fifth Kansas Cavalry will be held in Lawrence this week, October fifth and sixth…. There are not many left of the Fifth Kansas; probably there will be about forty here for the meeting.
  • “Edna McGee and Edna Estis were arrested today for disturbing the peace. The girls are said to have made insulting remarks to some man. They will be tried tomorrow.”
  • “There are two great needs in farm homes. One is more light in which of course is included ventilation, and the other is bath tubs. Poorly lighted stuffy rooms make homes gloomy. Lack of bath rooms prevent people enjoying the fine effects of absolute cleanness. The same is true of course in the towns but it is more of course in the country because town houses as a rule are better lighted.
  • “If you are losing appetite, lying awake nights, take Hood’s Sarsaparilla — it’s just the tonic you need.”… “Pickling spices at Woodward’s ‘Old Round Corner’ — for purity and pungency they are unequaled.”
