25 years ago: School board predicts need for second high school

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 28, 1986:

With an eye to the future, the Lawrence school board had voted unanimously to purchase 50 acres of land in west Lawrence for $136,916. The rectangular plot, 1,650 by 1,320 feet, was about one mile west of the intersection of 15th Street and Wakarusa Drive. School administrators were predicting that district enrollment would increase by 1,180 students in the next seven years and that there would be a strong need for a new secondary school.

Movies showing in Lawrence this week included “An American Tail,” “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home,” “Crocodile Dundee,” “Peggy Sue Got Married,” and “Children of a Lesser God.”
