40 years ago: Jail inmates to get Thanksgiving dinner

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 24, 1971:

Special Thanksgiving dinner menus were planned for inmates in both the Douglas County Jail and Lawrence Municipal Jail. As of noon today, the county jail held 24 occupants, all adult males, while the city jail had a population of four — three men and one woman. The county jail was preparing to serve a traditional turkey dinner, while the city’s jail menu featured friend chicken. Inmates of both jails were to be offered the traditional holiday fixtures of mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
