2 Lawrence men released from jail after being arrested Monday for burglary, trespassing

Two Lawrence men who were arrested Monday night for being on the roof of the former Masonic Temple building, 1001 Mass., were later released from jail Tuesday after Douglas County prosecutors did not file charges in the case.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were called to the building at 10:20 p.m. Monday for a trespassing call and found the two men on the top of the building. Police then took the suspects, ages 32 and 31, to the Douglas County Jail on charges of burglary, criminal damage and criminal trespassing, but they were released Tuesday afternoon after prosecutors declined to file charges Tuesday in district court, according to jail records.

Cheryl Wright, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County District Attorney’s office, said Tuesday the cases were referred back to police for possible citations in Lawrence Municipal Court.

The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects unless they are formally charged.
