25 years ago: Power outage delays game at Haskell Stadium

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 15, 1986:

At the recent Class 6A quarterfinal playoff football game between Lawrence and Olathe North high schools, the Haskell Stadium lights suddenly had blinked off. “We blew the fuse that feeds the light system and the stadium itself,” said Cliff Walters, Haskell maintenance worker. “It’s the first time it’s happened in the 20 years that I’ve been working here.” The lights were off from about 8:45 p.m. until 10:20, while the maintenance crew dug out the stadium wiring maps, called KPL, and worked to solve the problem in the illumination of the headlights and spotlights from some Lawrence police cars. A “pack of onlookers” followed the crew, offering advice and opinions, as the workers set out to check each of the 24 transformers in the stadium. Their search took them inside and outside the stadium, as well as into some “nearly-forgotten catacombs” under the seats. The faulty transformer was found after about 15 of them had been checked, and the game resumed, finishing up at 11:20 p.m. with Lawrence moving on to a semifinal contest against Shawnee Mission West the following weekend.
