Eudora escapes Chanute, will play Paola in sub-state

Eudora High held on for a 20-13 state-quarterfinal football victory, after Chanute’s potentially game-tying touchdown pass on fourth down and six from the Eudora 15-yard line was completed out-of-bounds through the back of the end zone.

Next Friday, the Cardinals (11-1) host Paola (11-1), which defeated Blue Valley Southwest, 35-21, Friday night. Eudora beat Paola, 18-10, during the regular season at Eudora.

Running back Gabe Cleveland rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns. After Cleveland’s third score, Eudora led 20-7 at the beginning of the second half, but did not score again, plagued by turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Chris Pyle rushed for 100 yards on 12 carries for the Cardinals.

The winner of Eudora-Paola moves on to the Class 4A state championship game at Salina District Stadium on Nov. 26.
