Club news for November 12, 2011

The University Bridge Club announces results of its Nov. 5 meeting with hosts George and Ruth Gibbs, and Al and Carol Smith.

Blue winners: Janet Dunn, first; Al Smith, second; Paul Jordan, third; Steven Bogler, fourth; and Ray Ikenberry, fifth.

Pink winners: Myrna Ikenberry, first; Cathy Waller, second; Hazel Stellmacher, third; Karen Zimmerer, fourth; and Donna Gatts, fifth.

The Omicron chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma celebrated its 70th anniversary with an Oct. 29 banquet at Famous Dave’s in Lawrence. As part of the program, three members were honored with special DKG pins for longtime membership. Members presented with pins were Marjorie Smith, 64 years; Mary Gauthier, 54 years; and Elaine Mulliken, 51 years.

Sally Maack gave the history of Delta Kappa Gamma, and Gauthier spoke about Omicron’s history. Special guests were Georgia Klein, Phi State representative; and Cynda Carr, editor of the Phi State newsletter, the Sunflower.

Valisha Nelson was unanimously voted in as a new member, and Mary Kaye Chandler joined the chapter as a transfer from Beta Chapter. Diane DeBacker, Kansas Commissioner of Education, will speak at the next meeting in February.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game Oct. 26 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Judy Hildreth and Dianne Childs, first in A; Steven Vossler and Vince Nordberg, second in A; Mark Osborn and Grant Sutton, third in A and first in B; Chris Lane and Carol Ball, fourth in A and second in B; and Marilyn Martin and Jack Flickinger, first in C.

East-West winners were David Piro and Paul Heitzman, first in A; Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, second in A and first in B; Dick Shaffer and Larry Weatherholt, third in A; Virginia Seaver and Jerry Sloan, fourth in A; Lois Clark and Shirley Reese, second in B; and Barbara Haverty and Florine Creek, first in C.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game Oct. 28 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Chris Lane and Brian Barrett, first in A and B; Ed Howard and John Fittell, second in A; Virginia Seaver and Mark Osborn, third in A; Mona Bell and Lois Clark, second in B; and Barbara McCorkle and Virginia Johnston, first in C.

East-West winners were Klee Zaricky and Sally Taylor, first in A and B; Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges, second in A and B; Florine Creek and Jean Otney, third in A; and Jack Flickinger and Dick Shaffer, first in C.

North-South winners were Lois Clark and Jan O’Connor, first in A and B; Steven Vossler and Vince Nordberg, second in A; Wanda Durbin and Mary Fenlon, third in A; Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, fourth in A and second in B; Chris Lane and Charles Hedges, third in B; and Margarete Hartman and Albert Ballard, first in C.

East-West winners were Eldon Herd and Mona Bell, first in A; David Piro and Paul Heitzman, second in A; Dave Chipman and Jerry Sloan, third in A; Mark Osborn and Gary Joyce, fourth in A and first in B; and Wanna Roszel and Mary Locniskar, second in B and first in C.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Nov. 4 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Larry Weatherholt and Steven Vossler, first in A; Chris Lane and Yvonne Hedges tied for second in A with Shirley Reese and Betty Collier; and Patrick Musick and Jolene Andersen, first in C.

East-West winners were Ed Howard and Mark Osborn, first in A; Catherine Blumenfeld and Lois Clark, second in A; David Piro and Paul Heitzman, third in A; and Virginia Johnston and Florine Creek, first in C.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Nov. 7 was directed by Virginia Seaver. Winners were Vince Nordberg and Mark Osborn, first; John Hickey and Grant Sutton tied for second with Mary Fenlon and Julia Dalton; and Jerry Sloan and Eldon Herd, fourth.
