40 years ago: School children investigate ‘World of Work’

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 11, 1971:

  • Hillcrest School sixth-graders were showing enthusiasm as they jumped into a “World of Work” project. They had established six classroom “factories” to manufacture products including candles, food, and sewn products, and had established a gift store to sell their products and a “warehouse” to store them. The students were hoping to raise enough money to fund an ecology project in the school yard.
  • The nearby city of Olathe had already collected $1,500 in a drive to raise funds to bring all their military personnel home for Christmas. Twelve names had been submitted to the campaign, compared with eight the previous year, according to campaign head Harry Welch. In 1970, the servicemen had been brought to Olathe for two weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter with the $7,000 collected in previous drives.
