25 years ago: Area frozen by unseasonably cold temperatures

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 11, 1986:

  • Record lows had greeted early risers in Lawrence this morning. The official temperature of 7 degrees had shattered the previous Nov. 11 low of 12 degrees, which had been set in 1911. Those getting on the road this morning had to contend with “frozen car doors, low batteries, sluggish engines and icy windows.” The city had also received 2.1 inches of snow.
  • A committee of Lawrence High School faculty members, parents, and one representative from Kansas University had recently suggested that LHS students be required to pass minimum competency tests before graduating. Brad Tate, LHS principal, said that the tests, as proposed, would be given in reading, writing, and math. Students would also be tested on their understanding of the democratic process, Tate said.
