Topeka church planning to pray for 42 hours straight

November 8, 2011

— Leaders of a Topeka church plan to pray without ceasing for 42 hours this weekend.

The Topeka House of Prayer will host the event, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday and ends at noon Sunday at the Faith Family Life Centre.

Organizers say the event will pray for Topeka and the U.S.

The Rev. Mike Shinkle, pastor of Open Way Church and an organizer, said people of all denominations are welcome.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that 101 interns from the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Mo., will lead worship and prayer.

"Jesus Said Not everyone that saith lord lord will enter in the kingdom of heaven
only those who doeth my will..

prayer is not the Key in this situation but returning to the first works that were ordained
since the foundations of the world began...

childern of God are in rebellion and disobeyed the first works; this in tact makes mercy
  come more slower then expected.

tomatogrower 6 years ago

Exactly. Why don't they work for 42 hours in a homeless shelter or cleaning and repairing an elders home?

+1 Just like those "occupy" wizards....

I wonder if our dear friend the Reverend Fred Phelps will come and pray too.

People sit and ridicule this idea, but you know what? It's nondenominational, not built on hate, and very anti-Phelps. Good for them. We need more of this in life, not less, regardless of whether/what you believe.

Kansas low quality preaching of the word of God-- "God dont like no ugly" such accusation

is not found in the word of God..they overlook Isaiah 53..

Ron Holzwarth 6 years ago

I just now read Isaiah Chapter 53. It is an interesting chapter, and it has been used by many to promote their own interpretation of later texts. It's wonderfully flexible because it can be interpreted in so many different ways, not just in the way that some consider to be obvious. It's only obvious for you if you are reading it from a biased viewpoint.

We don't have a concordance that defines for sure exactly what Isaiah himself meant by it, and it's quite likely that he himself didn't know its complete meaning. That is of course assuming that Isaiah actually is an historical character, and that he himself wrote it. I believe that text is a mystery that unfolds with new meanings as time passes.

That's good, because we need new interpretations of the ancient wisdom for each successive age, we certainly don't need one single answer that will be the definitive answer for all time, such as King Nebuchadnez'zar received from Daniel, as described in Daniel Chapter 4.

Is the group from KC serving pancakes?

TopJayhawk 6 years ago

This would be the T.H.O.P? the "Theatrical House of Pancakes? I wonder if they will have theatrical sausage too?

Just another publicity stunt. If it is not, then just do it and be quiet about it.

Doubt if Phred will be there. I think he only likes real pancakes.

I have been waiting for years to see whether prayer will regrow an amputated limb. Perhaps the time is now.

.Churches should stay out of politics, or be taxed.

Jesus was a liberal

This goes to show you that for this nest of the Christian prayerful Topeka is not really part of the USA, otherwise just praying for the USA ought to suffice. I always wonder why the conservative Christians always pray for a team to win over another one, praise the Lord for winning but not for losing, and never just pray for the Universe, known or unknown, since a "true" Christian would be all inclusive? Oh, and isn't it dangerous to pray for the USA anyway because there are gays in the military and birds might fall dead from the sky and fish by the hundreds might drown?

So I am assuming this is not a great enough photo op/national news cycle for Rev Gov Brownbackward to show up in his preachers coiffure.
"Driver, move that anti state taxation bus"! Please no more Extreme Makeover for Kansas, a la, Brownbackward!!

T.H.O.P. should open a drive thru so people can get their jesuses to go. With a side of bacon.

Liberty275 6 years ago

Believers in something that doesn't exist sit around and beg their fiction for 42 straight hours. I don't see a problem with that. If our friends on the left can rage against the wrong people for their economic trouble, I suppose others can pray to an imaginary god. No harm no foul.

tolawdjk 6 years ago

Wasn't there a Disney movie about 101 Interns? Something about Clinton De'Ville and wanting to use thier spotted blue dresses to make a Snuggie?

the_realest_mccoy 6 years ago

Yes, I believe Muslims are welcome. As long as they come to accept the jesus as their savior.

tomatogrower 6 years ago

Muslims and Christians pray to the same God, just different Messiahs. Jesus was not God, he was the son of God. Sometimes Christians don't understand this simple concept.

the_realest_mccoy 6 years ago

Duh. Accept jesus as your lord and savior or spend eternity in hell. Simple enough concept, I guess. Like don't mess with Texas.

another_right_wing_nut 6 years ago

Actually, you're wrong. Jesus was the known as the Son of God, but was actually God in the flesh. Have you heard of the Holy Trinity? Father, Son and the Holy Spirit?

The common misconception for non-believers is just as you stated. Nevertheless, if you're interested in learning the truth about Christianity, please feel free to message me directly.

another_right_wing_nut 6 years ago

We, we meaning believers, use the word Trinity to describe the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I don't believe I ever said it was in the Bible.

As for Jesus being the Son of God, and also God himself, here is your daily bible verse: Isaiah 9:6 -

Feel free to read this article to discern your own conclusion about the use of the word Trinity. That wasn't the point of my post.

Actually, IHOP teaches that in the end times (the apocalyptic period just before God returns to smite the sinful, a/k/a, any day now) a great "harlot religion" will arise to merge together Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, by--deceptively--preaching peace and charity!

So ... no, I doubt they'd welcome Muslims.

Watch out for those good-doers for they shall be called the Harlots of Satan.

Check out their website:

I especially liked "How to Discern False Teachers and Cults" (Hint: it all begins with not thinking for yourself. I could "discern" no hint of irony in the document.)

Interestingly, IHOP wants to tie itself to the orthodox Christian faiths (Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran) even to the point of highlighting the Nicene Creed. Unfortunately, one-thousand seven hundred years of faith finds "one holy catholic and apostolic church" erased from IHOP's "version" and replaced by a rump "one holy and apostolic church"! Why would a group wish to cloak itself in orthodoxy while rewriting its core historical statement of faith?

Bizarrely, they remove "catholic," which doesn't conflict with their theology, catholic merely meaning universal, while keeping "apostolic," which does conflict with their theology, referring to apostolic succession, and these orthodox faiths' claim to ecclesiastical and sacramental power and authority transferred in an unbroken line of ordinations from the apostles and therefore Jesus Christ. Q: if you're going to be Protestant why then not be Protestant? Who are you trying to fool? Apparently like all other 'sola scriptura' faiths, you still need a means of Biblical interpretation, and when you lack the roots of two millennia of apostolic tradition and teaching it's anybody's guess what hodge-podge you'll end up with.

Holy Cow, that's a lot of praying! which reminds me, are hindu people welcome? It sez it's open to all comers.

Howzzit work exactly? Is it tag team replacement for naps & bathroom breaks? Or you gotta hang in there for the full 42, take your hand off the altar & you're out?

To "pray without ceasing for 42 hours" requires some fore-thought, don't you think? What are the ground rules? What qualifies as a successful 42 hour non-stop group prayer session?

garyr 6 years ago

Does the last person to still be praying win a Chevy Volt? Is this like one of those "whoever keeps their hand on the car the longest wins" contest?

Stuart Evans 6 years ago

I've never understood prayer. You take the infallible word and actions of god(s), and then make special requests to him/her/it, in hopes that you can change it's mind. If you're successful, then the original divine plan wasn't infallible.

Matthew 6 1-8

1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

5 “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. 8 So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

for those of us who are believers in Christ, we should remember that Mike Bikle is a dangerous false prophet with a long history of false prophesy, he led the so-called "kansas city prophets" and IHOP is in fact a cult.

MarcoPogo 6 years ago

Is somebody going to pray for better education in math skills? Friday 5 pm - Sunday Noon is not 42 hours. (Or am I missing something here?)

garyr 6 years ago

Gnome wrote: " 8 So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him."
So, if He already knows what you need, why do you have to ask Him for it? Is He being selfish, and not giving it to you? Or is he just like "Whatever....Guess I'll wait 'til they ask me. I'm not going to waste my time handing all this stuff out if they're not going to ask for it! I'm lazy, and there's a football game on".

bearded_gnome 6 years ago

Garyr, I posted that, Matthew wrote that as God moved him to write.

prayer is much more than asking for things. submitting our requests is only one of at least four important elements of prayer.
when you pray you draw near to God. God knows the end from the beginning since He created what we conceive of as space and time. he already knows what we will ask for. "delight yourselves in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your hearts." that's psalm 34.

no, prayer is not making God into a cosmic coke machine.

yoornotmee 6 years ago

This would be news-worthy if they were going to actually do something. 42 hours of non-stop volunteering or 42 hours of non-stop sewing blankets for charity or 42 hours of non-stop fundraising with 100% going to an organization that actually helps people. But no. Instead they're going to spend 42 hours talking to themselves and they'll end it with a satisfied pat on their backs.

Why not? After all, 42 is the answer to the Ultimate Question about Life, the Universe, and Everything!

another_right_wing_nut (anonymous) replies… Actually, you're wrong. Jesus was the known as the Son of God, but was actually God in the flesh. Have you heard of the Holy Trinity? Father, Son and the Holy Spirit? = ARWN: Good point, but the early christians thrashed each other about, sometimes violently, over this issue for 300+ years until they settled it (sort of.) Early debates: Was he 1/2 man and 1/2 god? Did he have one drop of human blood and the rest is divine? Did he have one drop of divine blood and the rest was human? etc., etc. Gods breeding with humans is an ancient hope of many cultures; we want to touch the power of the divine, however it is defined. I would recommend a good read: Jesus: One Hundred Years Before Christ, Alvar Ellegard. The great ESSENE teacher would probably have been amused. BTW: I think it's fine this church wants to hold a long prayer meeting and wish them well.

Yet another opportunistic thread where Liberals show their bigotry.

Paul R Getto 6 years ago

Hmmmmmmm.......describing what probably happened instead of what people wish had happened is discussion, IMHO, not bigotry. I think Jesus had perhaps the most powerful message ever delivered and one of the most impossible to live up to. See Sermon on the Mount, for example. The problem, as we all know, is actually being loving to all, particularly those who hate us, impoverished by choice and blessed with infinite patience.

puddleglum 6 years ago

If I go pray, do I have to pay my taxes? or can i just do what the church does, run a business and not be taxed.

seriouscat 6 years ago

An entire thread bashing people who just want to get together and pray. What the heck is wrong with all of you jerks?
