A 68-year-old rural Lawrence man has been ordered to stand trial on charges of first-degree murder in connection with a shooting of a family member in a soybean field northwest of Champaign, Ill.

Gerard James appeared on Friday in Champaign County Circuit Court for a preliminary hearing. He is charged with shooting his 80-year-old cousin to death, and faces up to life in prison.

James has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and has requested a jury trial.
