From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 4, 1986:

• A pre-noon check of local polling places showed that 21.4 percent of voters had already braved the chilly early-November weather. Several people at Rusty’s South Side were not even waiting their turn for a voting booth, preferring to mark their ballots outside the booths. Additional booths were being sought before the 5:00 rush, and two precincts had phoned in a request for more pencils and ballot sleeves. Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes was predicting a “large turnout and a long night.”
• Most of the lighting for a recent Kansas University football game had been paid for by ABC-TV, who had televised the game. According to Terry Haskell, a representative from the firm who provided the lights, about 360,000 watts had been expended at the game and in testing on the previous day. Haskell said that the lights had been the equivalent of that needed to illuminate eight city blocks, or 60 homes. About 600 gallons of diesel fuel had been used for all the generators.
