25 years ago: Deer a danger to local drivers

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 3, 1986:

  • On the eve of Election Day, Republican Phill Kline was depicting incumbent Democrat Jim Slattery as a congressman who was “inconsistent” on the death penalty as well as being a big spender. Slattery had responded that Kline was distorting his record and that he would “look at the death penalty in those situations where I feel like it will be a deterrent. My position on this, in all candor, is evolving.” The two had met during a 2nd Congressional District debate, which had drawn about 100 people to Lawrence’s city hall and had also been broadcast on local television.
  • Deer had caused four accidents on a recent weekend, and Douglas County drivers were being warned to be alert for the animals as they crossed area highways. Although none of the accidents had caused serious injuries to the humans involved, the deer had been killed in two of the accidents, and property damage had been probably $500 or more to each of the four vehicles involved.
