40 years ago: ‘Litter Walk’ volunteers to clean up downtown
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 1, 1971:
Mrs. Walter Nash of the Women’s Division of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce was leading a “Fall Mini-Cleanup.” Participants in a “litter walk” were planning to begin at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning collecting trash from Sixth Street to South Park. Some community groups had volunteered for additional projects; for instance, the Salvation Army Youths and some participants in the Bess Stone Center had signed up to clean parking lots. Mrs. Nash expressed disappointment that more groups had not signed up for cleaning projects, saying that with over 900 organizations meeting regularly in Lawrence, “you’d think some would put some environmental improvement into their program.”
