25 years ago: Body of shooting victim found in Centennial Park

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 31, 1986:

  • Police had received a call at 12:40 a.m. about a shooting in Centennial Park, located west of Iowa Street between Sixth and Ninth streets. A fight had broken out after a large party, according to reports, and the body of a 26-year-old man was found in the park’s lower north parking lot, near the tennis courts. He apparently had been shot once in the head by a small-caliber handgun. Police had no suspects and were in the process of interviewing 30 to 50 witnesses.
  • Douglas County commissioners were preparing to review the Section 8 housing program at an upcoming meeting. The executive director of the Lawrence Housing Authority and the local Section 8 authority were planning to meet with commissioners, reviewing the past year and the goals of the program, which matched housing owners with prospective renters. Houses were inspected before rental assistance was provided to participants. There had been a significant increase in local Section 8 activity in the past year.
