40 years ago: Marriage licenses almost top record high in county

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 30, 1971:

  • While feeling “not so well” after recent back surgery, Kansas Gov. Robert Docking had asked an aide to read him every get-well card and letter that he had been sent during his ordeal. The governor had been receiving between 500 and 700 letters a day since undergoing surgery for a slipped disc.
  • According to employees of the Douglas County Probate Court, the number of marriage licenses issued in May 1971 was the second-highest of any month. As of the close of business on the last Friday of May, 114 marriage licenses had been issued — a total second only to the 120 issued in May 1968.
