25 years ago: Planning commission votes down 17th and Haskell rezoning

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 29, 1986:

  • The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission was divided on the issue of development in the 1700 block of Haskell Avenue. A rezoning request had come before the commission, which had voted 5-3 against the plan to allow the site to be used for warehousing and light industrial uses. The request involved rezoning about 2.5 acres at 1705 Haskell from RS-2 (single-family residential) to M-1A (light industrial).
  • The Douglas County Safety Belt Committee had recently handed out prizes to more than 250 people who were found wearing their seat belts at the Hillcrest and Wal-Mart parking areas. The committee handed out coupons for free food items donated by local merchants. Many people also took a test ride on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Seat Belt Convincer, a contraption that showed the dangers of crashing at as little as 5 miles per hour.
