From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 25, 1971:

• A front-page photo showed Tom Harmon, firefighter at Lawrence fire station No. 2, with a nest of fledgling robins. Tom, who had earned the nickname “Mother” from his co-workers for his protection of the robins, said that a nest had been built in the same spot on the training tower steps for the past three seasons.
• Rudy Larson, who had reported to police in mid-May that an armed robbery had taken place at the service station where he worked, was arrested by Douglas County Sheriff’s officers and charged with grand theft and falsely reporting the armed robbery. Larson had claimed that a man had entered Ballew’s Service Station in Baldwin when Larson was working alone, and that the armed robber had escaped with $531 after pushing Larson down a flight of stairs.
• Darcy Schild and John Nitcher spoke to their fellow graduates at Lawrence High School’s 97th commencement. At the ceremony in Allen Fieldhouse, the student speakers urged their peers to use positive means, such as voting, to improve society, and to cultivate inner peace and stable lives.
