40 years ago: North Lawrence bus service under heated discussion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 21, 1971:

  • Lawrence had spent about 30 minutes on the previous afternoon under a tornado warning (“as opposed,” the article said, “to a more tranquil tornado watch”), but the brunt of the storm had passed to the north of the city. A tornado had been sighted by Kansas Turnpike personnel about 1 1/2 miles northeast of the city. The funnel had sent Tonganoxie residents scurrying for their basements when the sirens sounded at 4:03 p.m., but no damage was reported.
  • The issue of a city-subsidized bus route for North Lawrence caused much talk but no action at a recent meeting of the Lawrence City Commission. After bus proponents had shown the results of a survey and a map indicating at least 500 potential riders from North Lawrence every day, City Manager Buford Watson argued that the only persons who would use the bus were “captives,” by which he meant those who had no other means of transportation. “A person who has a car will use it,” he said.
