40 years ago: Cable television service planned for city
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 20, 1971:
- Max Falkenstien, “widely known television-radio executive and announcer,” was pictured on the construction site of Sunflower Cablevision at 644 New Hampshire. The picture caption described the new service as one which “brings reception from a single master antenna directly to the sets by means of a small cable rather than the normal antenna. Quality of reception is substantially improved and a variety of new stations and services are provided.”
- Gary Condra, director of adult and vocational education in the Lawrence school system submitted his resignation to the school board. Condra was leaving to become executive director of Cottonwood, where he would be responsible for direction and supervision of programs for those with developmental disabilities. The non-profit Cottonwood corporation was seeking funds to finance a building on South 31st Street.
