25 years ago: Light turnout at school bond election

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 20, 1986:

  • As of noon, sunny skies and warm temperatures had failed to lure Lawrence voters down to the polls for a school bond election. A late-morning check showed a 5.58 percent turnout in the city’s 32 polling places. The election was giving Lawrence residents a chance to vote on an $8.6 million school bond issue to fund a new elementary school as well as expansions to three other schools.
  • Ken Harmon had recently resigned as acting emergency preparedness coordinator for Douglas County. His was the second resignation from that post in the last two months, as Phil Leonard had left the job on March 31 after having held it for six years.
  • Lawrence theaters were showing the following movies: “Top Gun,” “Short Circuit,” “The Trip to Bountiful,” “Sweet Liberty,” and “8 Million Ways to Die.”
