Manhattan ? The Manhattan City Commission has rolled back an ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

Those two categories had been added to the city’s anti-discrimination policy just three months ago by the city commission. But new members were elected to the panel in April, and opponents continued to push to repeal the ordinance.

Tuesday’s vote was 3-2. The Manhattan Mercury reports that Mayor Jim Sherow and Commissioner Rich Jankovich voted to retain the ordinance. Both said they were disappointed by the repeal and would have preferred to give the law a chance to be tested.

Commissioners who voted to repeal the ordinance said they were concerned about the mechanism created to enforce it.
