Funeral home owners plan to buy financially troubled Topeka cemetery

? The owners of several funeral homes say they will buy the financially troubled Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Thursday that Ren and Theresa Newcomer signed a letter of intent to buy Mount Hope, but details aren’t final.

Newcomer said he and his wife intend to re-establish trust funds and start immediate clean-up and repairs.

The Newcomers own four funeral homes and a cemetery in Topeka, as well as funeral homes in eight other states.

The 160-acre Mount Hope Cemetery, which opened in 1908, has been under receivership since last year.

Before that, the Kansas Attorney General tried to dissolve the corporation running the cemetery because of several violations, including not keeping minimum amounts of money in three trust funds for care of the property.
