Brooke Jelniker leaving KU women’s basketball team, transferring to University of San Diego

Freshman guard Brooke Jelniker has left the Kansas women’s basketball program and will be transferring to the University of San Diego.

The 6-foot-1 Jelniker, from Thunder Ridge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., played in 17 games for KU last season, averaging 1.1 points and 1.4 rebounds.

“I have enjoyed the KU campus and the Lawrence community, but have decided that the KU women’s basketball program was not right for me as a person or a player,” Jelniker said. “I have chosen to continue to play basketball at the University of San Diego. I look forward to my time at USD and feel that I have found the right home for me as a student athlete.”

After being given her transfer release on April 1, Jelniker decided on San Diego after considering Colorado State and Gonzaga.

“Brooke is an amazing athlete and a very versatile basketball player,” San Diego coach Cindy Fisher said. “She will make us better everyday in practice during her red-shirt year, and at the same time, improve her game and take it to another level. Brooke is an incredible student and a person of high character and we can’t wait for her to join our USD family.”
