Maj. Gen. Brooks to turn over command of 1st Infantry Division

? After two years at Fort Riley and a tour in Iraq, Maj. Gen. Vincent Brooks is preparing for his next assignment.

Brooks is commanding general of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division. He will hand over the division command to Maj. Gen. William C. Mayville in a ceremony May 25 at the northeast Kansas post.

Brooks told journalists on Tuesday that despite all the growth in recent years, Fort Riley will see more changes. He says later this year and into 2012, Fort Riley will have its largest number of soldiers on post since 1994.

There are 18,000 soldiers assigned to the post, but deployments have kept the population to less than 11,000 at any one time.

Brooks says that total could grow to more than 16,000.
