40 years ago: KU chancellor praises student ‘soldiers’ at Senior-Parent Lunch

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 17, 1971:

  • Nearly 1,300 people attended the Senior-Parent Lunch given at Kansas University. Chancellor Laurence Chalmers compared the graduating seniors to “crack troops,” adding that he felt like “the old master sergeant who has just received word that his best combat team is being mustered out and will be replaced by a group of rookies in August.” As support for his analogy, he pointed out that the university had been “under siege” for much of the previous four years from various political factions, from CBS news, from the Kansas attorney general and even from “apprehensive or angry parents.”
  • Kansas Turnpike officials reported that four deer had been killed over the weekend on the roadway — one near Bonner Springs, one near Wichita, and two near El Dorado. The resulting damage totaled $1,450.
  • Having recently voted to give the Lawrence Bus Co. an $8,000 subsidy to help the company survive the slow summer season, the Lawrence City Commission was now studying the possibility of a subsidized bus service into North Lawrence. The reasoning was that, with city subsidization of the service, it was not fair for some areas of the city to go without bus service.
